Located directly beside Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono at the historic Riverboat Centre, Waimarie Co. is an important part of the Upokongaro to Tasman Sea experience—connecting visitors with the awa, the trail and Whanganui’s remarkable riverboat heritage.

Built in 1899, the PS Waimarie once carried passengers, mail and cargo between Whanganui and Pipiriki, when the river was the principal transport route through the region. After spending around 40 years beneath the river, she was raised and restored through an extraordinary community effort. Today, the Waimarie and Riverboat Museum provide a tangible connection to this important chapter in the much older and continuing story of Te Awa Tupua and its communities.

Waimarie Co.’s comfortable cruiser bikes are ideal for exploring the easy, mostly off-road shared pathway beside the river, through central Whanganui and onwards to the Tasman Sea at North Mole. Choose a shorter ride, a half-day adventure or a full day of exploring at your own pace.

Before, during or after your ride, visit the Riverboat Museum and enjoy a coffee at Ngaporo Coffee Bar, open daily inside the Riverboat Centre with views across the awa. Ngaporo takes its name from a rapid north of Pipiriki and remembers the crew of the riverboat MV Ohura who lost their lives there in 1940.
