Taumarunui: connecting Great Rides, Heartland Rides and beyond

Taumarunui sits at the centre of an extraordinary network of cycling journeys. Connect with Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono, the Timber Trail, the Forgotten World Highway and a network of Heartland, Connector and local rides extending across the Central North Island and beyond.

Timber Trail Connector

The 24 km Grade 3 Timber Trail Connector follows quiet sealed and gravel backroads from Ongarue to Taumarunui. Winding through rural hill country beside the Ongarue River, it links the southern end of the Timber Trail with Taumarunui’s visitor services and the Mountains to Sea Connector Ride—creating the pathway between two Great Rides.

Ohura Connector

The 60 km Grade 3 Ōhura Connector links the Timber Trail Great Ride with the Forgotten World Highway Heartland Ride. Following quiet rural roads through Matiere and Ōhura, this scenic “Prison Break” route also forms part of the Kōpiko Aotearoa coast-to-coast journey.

Mountains to Sea Connector

The 45 km Grade 3 Mountains to Sea Connector links Taumarunui with Oio Road and the Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono network. Following quiet rural backroads through the King Country, part of the route is also shared with Te Araroa Trail.

Ohura Connector

The 60 km Grade 3 Ōhura Connector links the Timber Trail Great Ride with the Forgotten World Highway Heartland Ride. Following quiet rural roads through Matiere and Ōhura, this scenic “Prison Break” route also forms part of the Kōpiko Aotearoa coast-to-coast journey.
